It is really hard to believe people on the Left and Democrats in Congress hate the President more than they love their country. Rooting for our brave military to fail is the most despicable act ever in the history of our nation. They want Donald Trump to fail! I cannot understand anyone putting their hatred for one man over our great nation. I am still in awe why there are people who still vote for them!!

I think your name says it all. You're a warmonger. Have you ever been in a war? By the way, our "brave military" isn't doing anything but pushing buttons right now.

No, he doesn't. Eastman is wrong. Previous presidents had some kind of Congressional approval for their actions. I fear we conservatives have screwed the pooch now and will be looking at the Democrats back in the House and possibly in charge of the Senate next year. Donald Trump has been a dissappointment.

Well, Obama thoroughly attacked Libya and got rid of their leader for example without Congressional approval or even notification.

You are so totally wrong. Do your own research if you don't believe this.

Thank you, Professor Eastman for the clarity and thank you, Julie for bringing in the experts.

I guess we haven’t been to war since 1945.

You are absolutely correct

Hogwash. The President does not have the authority to use the US military and the US Treasury to attack another nation unless it's in direct response to an outside attack or unless he has the consent of the governed. The founding fathers were not that stupid. Despite the nauseating propaganda and the despicable rhetoric from Trump supporters and war mongers, Iran was not threatening us. Trump attacked Iran to appease the Israelis and their greater Israel agenda. It's all about oil, power, and greed. Trump betraying his base and caving to Netanayhu has destroyed MAGA and may destroy America, if not the world. It amazes me that Trump can expose himself as a pathological liar and a mass murderer and his supporters will engage in mental gymnastics to try to find excuses for what is obviously the behavior of a psychopath. Although I voted for him, I now can't wait to see him rot in prison.

I agree, and have been contending that the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force was the key element in favor of President Trump initiating action against Iran. So If Congress wants to say that what happened was illegal, then get to work repealing that AUMF, although that won't make much difference in this case, since it was the law in effect when force was initiated.

I would also contend that, in relation to the AUMF, Congress seems to do as much as they can to make themselves irrelevant in these issues. Why would they pass a declaration that gives the President the sole vote in determining when military action should be taken regarding certain nations, then complain when he takes such military action? They gave a blank check to the White House, then complain when it's cashed!

Leave it to illiterate Congress-critters to complain about this, and the Libertarian fringe to not understand all the relevant laws in the matter. And could it be a coincidence that it was the 47th President who took this action in the 47th year of the current regime in Iran?

Thank you so very much for clarifying this. This is a military operation or action not a war. People are skeptical of the fact that congress has only declared war a small number of times..I believe 5. While they believe that it was ok for all the other times presidents did war

And there are precedents in recent history: President Obama killed Osama Bid Laden without Congressional approval. President Obama invaded Libya and killed their leader Gaddafi without Congressional approval. President Biden killed the leader of Al-Qaeda without Congressional approval.
